Guide your users using our

PolicyClue Browser Extension

By installing a browser extension on the user’s browser, policies can be designed and implemented to educate users and raise awareness of, for example, company-specific or privacy regulations that may apply to certain predefined online tools or websites.

Awareness Decks

PolicyClue enables its users to publish custom awareness content directly as a website overlay on visited websites when using our browser extension. This content can contain arbitrary HTML code, which can be designed using our designer in the PolicyClue portal. In contrast to pop-ups, these overlays follow a predefined workflow and cannot be easily clicked away by the user.

Awareness Quiz

To improve the effectiveness of awareness content, additional awareness quizzes can be designed with questions to examify users after clicking through the provided awareness decks and to test their learning progress. In order to enter the website, the user needs to answer a configurable number of questions successfully, which are selected at random from a customizable question pool.

Continuous Training

PolicyClue is designed to have a configurable interval per policy, which defines how often the awareness decks shall be displayed for each online tool in the domain list of the policy. Additionally, this interval also specifies how often an awareness quiz shall be completed by the user for each policy (in contrast to awareness decks, not for each individual website).

Pricing

Even though we would love to publish PolicyClue as a completely open-source and free project, our ongoing efforts to maintain and further develop desired features, as well as to manage on-premise deployments, mean that we need to cover our costs. To support small businesses, we have decided to offer a free version with all features for companies with up to 20 users.

Note: If users work with multiple browsers and PolicyClue is installed on each, apply the appropriate multiplier, as each browser counts as a separate User Browser installation.

    FAQs

    Frequently asked questions

How can company-wide onboarding user awareness trainings be created?
To create awareness trainings, which needs to be complete before the user is allowed to browse the internet, it needs to be flagged as a global policy.
How do I link a compliance policy to domains?
Policies can be linked either to individual hostnames directly attached to the policy or to a host list that represents a category of domains (e.g., AI tools).
Can I have different policies affecting the same domains?
Yes, when multiple policies match the same domains, the policies are merged. This allows users to define a base policy (e.g., responsible use of internet tools) and extend it with additional decks or questions—for example, specific information about AI tools, which are a subset of online tools.
How long does it take to update awareness content?
Modified awareness content is instantly delivered to the browser plugins as soon as a user visits a website. To minimize traffic generated by the plugins, domains that are visited but not linked to any policies will only be re-queried after 24 hours.
Am I limited in the design aspects of the awareness content?
No, as awareness decks can be designed either using our HTML editor in the policy settings or by directly modifying the underlying HTML code.
Can PolicyClue be used for announcements?
Yes, to create a company-wide announcement or information campaign, use the wizard to generate a new global announcement.
    Which languages are supported?
While the awareness content in the decks can be in any language, the browser plugin’s user interface currently supports German and French, with English used as a fallback if the user’s browser is set to an unsupported language.
How can I exclude a domain from a category-based policy?
Hostlists can be extended by either adding additional hostnames or be declaring hostnames which shall be ignored. A use case could be, that you want to exclude domains of a trusted file sharing provider from being included in the polcy, while still showing the popup for other domains in the same category.
How many questions does a user need to answer correctly to pass?
Whether and how many questions a user must answer is defined in the policy settings. The questions themselves are then displayed in a randomized order until the user has provided the predefined number of correct answers.
How will the data-loss prevention be implemented in future releases?
In addition to the core functionality of PolicyClue, we are currently implementing further features such as regex-based Data Loss Detection and Prevention, allowing the browser extension to locally observe user behavior on websites.

    Behind the Scenes

PolicyClue was initiated after identifying the need for a solution that could deliver timely user education at the moment specific websites are accessed, while also informing users about applicable internal regulations and policies. Dissatisfied with existing tools such as proxy notices or standard pop-ups, which are often ignored or easily dismissed, we set out to develop a more effective and user-centric alternative: PolicyClue.

Originally conceived as an internal side project, the concept quickly gained traction following discussions with industry peers who confirmed a broader demand for such a solution. This recognition led to the official launch of PolicyClue as a KastGroup product. Moreover, the availability of an air-gapped, on-premise deployment option enables organizations with strict data protection requirements to implement the solution within their own infrastructure.
